Today’s blog post is short.
Writing a blog entry typically takes me one to two hours. Today I didn’t have that long to write, which is my fault.
Last week I took a story pitch for issue 12 of the Independent, Clark’s newspaper that’s published every other Wednesday.
Regrettably, I didn’t immediately pounce on the story, and waited two days to start it while I finished another one.
My tardiness backfired on me.
I spent more than eight hours today tracking down people for interviews, emailing people to confirm facts and writing two stories for the upcoming issue. I skipped my calculus class because I was overwhelmed with a lengthy to-do list for my “College Newspaper” class.
However, on the bright side, I learned that it’s important to start on a story as soon as it’s assigned, so you don’t feel stressed later down the road.
I’m still trying to learn this lesson more than 13 years after my first college newspaper story.
